'Growth Spurt' - What it is all about?

What is Growth Spurt?

A sudden increase in the bone length of the baby/toddler over night is termed as Growth Spurt. It may last for 2 to 7 days depending upon the developmental milestone the baby is about to attain through that spurt. Each baby’s growth is different phase and pattern and hence they get this spurt when they are two weeks, three weeks, six weeks, three months, six months, 1 year, 18 months old etc., Experts also say that the child will face spurt until adolescences.

How to identify a Spurt?

  • The child may seem to be hungrier than usual or they may seem to lose their appetite completely.
  • The child may tend to sleep longer or they may stay awake throughout the night.
  • The child may seem to be crankier, restless and clingy than usual or they may look very tired.

Dos and Don’ts during Growth Spurt

·         Refrain from giving any soothing feeling for the child (by pressing the legs), which may hinder the growth that was intended to happen.

·         Feed the child with healthy, supportive food that can aid her in growth.

·         Allow the child to take enough rest.

How many days once you trim your toddler's hair?

Have you ever thought that even an uncut hair would change your toddler's behavior? Has your child all of a sudden become cranky with no reason? Is he crying and showing tantrums unnecessarily? Try giving him a hair cut!! That could also be the reason at times.

Especially hair of children those who are given with a balanced nutritious food (which most of the parents provide) would tend to grow faster. But what brings in the behavioral change in him is the hair behind his ears. He will find it very irritating at times and his inability to communicate it to you will make him feel annoyed. The longer it grows crankier he will be. Worst case is that he may even start developing rashes behind his ears.

So, it is always better to give a hair cut once in a month or even 20 days once if needed. Don't forget to insist on removing the hair behind the ears properly.

Is your Toddler Complaining about Leg Pain Often?

It is very common for a toddler to complain about Leg pain often. Sometimes they may get very excited and tend to exhaust all their energy by involving themselves in Outdoor activities. But when should you be concerned about it?

Is your kid complaining about the pain in their calf muscles? It could be their growth spurt. Growth spurt happens mainly during the night hours when the kid is fast asleep and you can notice that their arms and legs have grown up overnight. Growth spurt may last for one or two days. Growth spurt occurs at ages from new born to 10 years old children. How to identify whether it is a spurt?

  • The child may seem to be hungrier than usual or they may seem to lose their appetite completely.
  • The child may tend to sleep longer or they may stay awake throughout the night.
  • The child may seem to be crankier than usual or they may look very tired.

Growth spurt is good for a child, which all parents should remember. Refrain from giving any soothing feeling for the child, which may hinder the growth that was intended to happen. It is always better to refrain from compressing the calf muscles because it is said to be the 'Second Heart' of a human body and compressing it may hinder the blood flow to the various parts of the body.

Note that sometimes leg pain may also be caused due to calcium or vitamin D deficiency in the body. Supplementing the child with the calcium rich food will also help to great extent. Click here  to read many healthy food and their nutritional values.

First Aid for Burns caused due to Hot Water or Milk

Anyone who have a baby or a toddler at home is for sure going to have some extra care while handling with hot objects. But Accidents are Accidents. It can happen regardless of how careful you are going to be. I never allow my son inside the kitchen once he started to walk fearing of such incidents. Even then, one day he poured hot milk on his hand. In spite of me reacting instantly, pushing the cup away from his hand, showing his hand in running water he  burnt(first degree) his hand, just because of a mistake i made(which i would mention below).

How to react?

  •  Most important of all is to react instantly. Each and every moment you delay the wound will go deeper in the skin.
  • Push the vessel that contained the hot water away from the child to avoid further injuries in other parts of the body also.
  • Rush him to the near water source(preferably tap) and show the affected area in running water.
  • Simultaneously remove the clothes including the under wear and other accessories, without stopping your child from exposing to the running water.
My son took the cup with hot milk in his hand and Believing that his palm would only be the affected area i didn't care about his arm. Unfortunately he was wearing a full hand shirt and I didn't care about removing his dress also. The hotness in the milk present in his shirt didn't come down causing first degree burn in his arm.  So please undress your child simultaneously while exposing him to the running water.

  • Don't hesitate to take help from some one who is near by. Ask them to pour more water using a cup when you are exposing to the running water.
  • Don't care about the child's cry. Instead check for any burns in other parts of the body also.
  • Once the above steps have been done, apply any ointment meant for this purpose in the affected areas.
  • If needed, fix an appointment with his doctor.

Constipation in Babies who are less than a year old - Remedy

Constipation in Babies who are less than one year is very common because this is the stage in which you would keep introducing to many new Foods. So you needn't rush to the doctor and say that your child is constipated when its only one day since he has pooped.

When to Worry About It?

  • When you find blood stains in the toilet.
  • When your child has not pooped for two days even after you have given 5-6 meals apart from the breast milk.
  • When your child's poop is very  hard that the child finds it very difficult to push it out, for two or three days continuously.
  • When your child's anus has got fissures because of trying very hard to push it out.
What could be done?
  • Avoid giving biscuits because the main ingredient in all biscuits(even those that claim to be the healthy ones) is plain flour which causes constipation even in adults.
  • It could be easily treated with home made medicines. Click here to read few of them.
  • Avoid BRAT diet, the one that is advised to give for the kids having diarrhea, to tighten the stool. This diet includes Banana(Yes!Banana causes constipation), Rice, Apple(raw), Toasts(bread, etc.,) etc.,
  •  While introducing to new food, you should give the same food for continuous three days and check for any allergy or constipation. If  any such is found out refrain from giving that particular food temporarily and can try giving it again exactly after two months.
  • Even after doing all these if your child's bowel movement is not back to normal do consult a doctor who may either suggest with any medicines or a wax like medicine that has to be kept inside the anus to loosen the stool.
